What is Personality?

“Personality“ is a word we hear that makes our mind and brain think of all the unique characteristics that make us different from others. As mentioned by Francis Galton in his theory of ‘individual difference’, where he states that every individual is different from one another, personality is one of the concepts which reflects his theory. Personality not only consists of traits, but how we dress, our body language, and our communication skills also reflect our personality, that is why personality assessment measures your characters and traits.

Where did the word “Personality” come from?

The word “personality” stems from the Latin word persona, which refers to a theatrical mask worn by performers to either project different roles or disguise their identities. 

Often in our daily lives, we call each other or describe each other with adjectives such as seems diligent, intelligent, hardworking, sociable, caring, and anxious; sometimes, we infer such adjectives to be personality traits, which is incorrect.  However, personality has some well-defined theories and concepts which describe an individual more methodically and adopt an evidence-based approach.

What are Personality Assessments?

To know about our personalities, we often use a personality assessment. This assessment has various uses in today’s world, the most prominent uses are in the recruitment process of companies and industries, in the medical field, often to diagnose a personality disorder, in politics, military forces, law-making, etc. Various types of personality assessments are there; some of the famous ones are the Myers-Briggs Personality Assessment (MBTI), Big Five Inventory (BFI), Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), and Cattell’s 16 Personality Form (16 PF). Not everyone is well versed in English, so these types of personality assessments are often translated into different languages to reduce cultural bias; we all enjoy taking these assessments and knowing about our unique personalities; however, it is a breath-taking task to make these assessments for psychometricians, several efforts go from making and reviewing thousands of statements and framing them in a proper assessment following the statistical analysis and industry standards.

Influence of Personality Assessments on the Workplace

Some major uses of these personality assessments are to optimize recruitment, training, identifying and developing Hi-Pos, succession planning, and Organization growth. Personality assessments provide insights to an employee to better understand their inclinations, and their colleagues’ or managers’ personalities. Companies also take advantage of such assessments to identify the right people to hire and identify their improvement areas to develop. 

Personality Assessments can also be used to create more cohesive teams, improve interpersonal relations, and increase job satisfaction levels, and engagement levels within the organization.
